PSD MEO will integrate political core of Luís Marques Mendes’s presidential candidacy for understanding that “it is positive to have a safe hand pair that knows the institutions”.
“In times of uncertainty, we have a safe hand pair that knows the institutions is a positive data,” explains Sebastião Bugalho, insisting on the idea that Gouveia and Melo tries to contradict: political experience is one of Marques Mendes’s great advantages.
In this interview, the former commentator also leaves a criticism of Rui Rio, the former PSD president who now supports the admiral’s candidacy: “Rui Rio did not realize that it was criticized by Marques Mendes because it lost 4 elections. It was not the political critics who were criticizing Rui Rio, they were the voters.”
New government is “eminently European”
Looking at the new governing cast and the speech Luis Montenegro made in his inauguration, Sebastião Bugalho remembers Europe. “Speaks of bureaucracy, security and defense and speaks of illegal immigration that are the priorities of the commission in the last seven months.”
Specifically in defense, it grants that the goal of 2% of GDP for defense this year has not been taken to the election campaign, but justifies this with the NATO summit that it will “bring new goals and new obligations to members”, noting that there are two modalities that can “help Portugal” achieve this goal:
“The rearm that has 150 million loans that can come from the commission and the EDIP that lit up to 1.5 billion by 2027”.
New legislature is to “dialogue with everyone”
The fragmented European Parliament is used by Sebastião Bugalho as an example of how it is possible to reach agreement with the socialists to put in major reforms. But there are no preferred partners: “We do not exclude anyone, and we will not have any privileged interlocutor.”
