Brazilian Thiago Ávila and Swedish Greta Thunberg are among the crew who risks driving the Israeli blockade
A month after being bombarded by drones, the Freedom Flotilha, a coalition of activists against war in it is about 48 hours from the Palestinian territory besieged by the blockade of Israel. The group takes food and medicines and expects to open a channel of access to the hungry population. Brazilian Thiago Ávila, an internationalist and environmental activist, and Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, known for his struggle against global warming, are among the crew that risks drilling Israeli blockade. Another member of the ship is Irish actor Liam Cunningham.
The vessel, nicknamed Madeleine, departed on June 1 of Catânia, an Italian port. It is possible to accompany the boat approaching Gaza through this link. Last Thursday (5), the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported that “Military Sources” from Israel informed the journal that the vessel will not be allowed to dock in Gaza. In a message sent today to Agência Brasil, Brazilian Thiago Ávila said that the vessel is 430 kilometers from Gaza and activists expect to dock in the territory on Monday (9).
“We are in contact with many people, the Gaza doctors collective, especially the collective of journalists. They are all there, waiting for our arrival and Israel continues to threaten, saying that it will intercept our mission and even threatening to attack our mission,” said the activist. The boat houses 12 activists from seven different countries, being Thiago the only non -European. “We have social majorities in the world on our side. People know in their hearts that kill hungry children is wrong,” he added.
According to Thiago, the goal is to deliver food and medicines in Gaza and return, making room for more boats and people to do the same. “We hope this mission has a significant impact that will open this humanitarian corridor of peoples. We expect Israel to give up the idea of committing a war crime and attacking us,” he said. Two days earlier, Thiago reported on his social network that they visualized drones near the Madeleine vessel.
In her social network, Swedish environmentalist Greta justified that there is no climate justice with the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and the Palestinian people genocide. “[Nossa missão visa] Challenge Israeli blockade and genocide while our accomplicment governments fail to interrupt. We once again sail towards Gaza – not carrying weapons, but medical foods and supplies. Systematic hunger and deprivation of basic needs are some of the many methods of war that Israel is using against Palestinians, ”he defended. A first attempt to get to Gaza was frustrated when another group of the group, conscience, was bombarded by two drones near Malta’s territorial waters.
