The candidate for presidential candidate of the Democratic and Senator Party of Colombia, Miguel Uribe Turbay, has suffered a bullet attack while he was at a rally in Bogotá.
The politician, belonging to the party of former president Álvaro Uribe, has received firearm shots in the middle of the greeting to supporters who were in the political event-around 20 people-who took place in the town of Fontibón in the Colombian capital.
“Armed subjects shot him in the back while participating in a campaign event about 5.00 PM,” the Democratic Center party has initially indicated in a statement.
The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, confirmed the arrest of a person who would have participated in the attack against Uribe and has indicated that “the entire hospital network” of the capital is “on alert” in case it required a transfer. After the attack, he has been taken to the hospital and have not yet transcended details of his health status.
The Colombian Police have ratified the arrest of one of the souchy, a minor who has shot at the senator and who would also have been injured in the leg, so he has needed medical assistance and has been transferred to the hospital.
In addition, two other civilians present at the Uribe rally, a man and a woman, have suffered wounds during the attack.
“We are at this time (…) in an exhaustive review at the scene with all institutional capacities to (…) locate and capture the people who committed this detestable and abominable made against Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay,” said the police director, General Carlos Fernando Triana, in statements to the media.
The candidate received “two bullet impacts”
The attack occurred in the Modelia neighborhood, which is part of the town of Fontibón, in the west of Bogotá, where Uribe Turbay, of the Uribista Democratic Center and who participated in a political rally, received two shots, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.
“The attack against the candidate of the Democratic Center Party, who received two bullet impacts in his body and in which two other people were also injured, was recorded in the Modelia neighborhood of the town of Fontibón (…) where a child under 15 years of age was apprehended that carried a GLOCK GLOCK gun (9 millimeters),” said the entity.
The Prosecutor’s Office reported that it activated a strategy with “four investigative lines” and the opening of two criminal news, in coordination with the National Police to try to clarify the fact, identify the material and intellectual authors, and prosecute them.
The priority of the Prosecutor’s Office is “the collection of information and physical evidence that allows establishing the truth about the attack and identifying and prosecuting both the material authors and the determinants.”
The attorney general, Luz Adriana Camargo Garzón, described the attack as a “attack against the country’s democratic participation” and asked the institutions to “shield the electoral process” of 2026 “and give full guarantees to campaigns and the candidates for the exercise of political power, as the strength of democracy.”
