The coalition in Israel faces a threat of disintegration. The chase party threatened to leave if the Act on Exceptions of ultra -orthodox Jews is not approved.
The Ultraordox Political Group of ŠAS as the second largest coalition party in the Israeli government on Monday threatened the fall of the government, unless Parliament does not approve the law that would prevent the recruitment of ultraordox Jews into the armed forces. I Israel’s Supreme Court ruled in June last year that the Ministry of Defense can no longer grant across exceptions for the ultra -orthodox community whose members are only engaged in a study of religion. The exemption from the compulsory military obligation was observed since the foundation of Israel in 1948. At that time, however, ultra -orthodox (Haredim) was only a small part of the Jewish population in Israel.
Pressure on Netanyahua
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under the pressure of his side of Likud to call more ultra -orthodox men and introduce punishments for those who avoid levy. ŠAS with 11 deputies in the Israeli parliament (Kneste) disagrees with this and, on the contrary, demands the adoption of a law that would permanently free the ultra -orthodox Jews from military service. She gave the Prime Minister two days to find a solution.
“We do not want to overthrow the right -wing government, but we have reached our limit,” said Ašer Medina, spokesman for public service radio. “If there is no solution at the last minute, we will vote for the dissolution of the Knesset,” he said.
The opposition plan
AFP writes that the opposition is trying to include the bill on the dissolution of the Knesset in the Wednesday Plenary session program in the hope that it will use the contradictions of coalition parties to overthrow the government.
