Wikipedia publishers are upset against artificial intelligence

The Wikimedia Foundation (non-profit organization that deals with the maintenance and development of the Wikipedia Enciclopedia-n.red.) Announced the suspension of an experiment just two days after launch-on June 4-on the use of artificial intelligence for the generation of short summaries on Wikipedia.

According to Oxu.AZ, the information was published by the 404 Media publication.
A representative of the Wikimedia Foundation said that the experiment started on June 2 and aimed to facilitate the understanding of complex Wikipedia for readers with different levels of training. Q

For this purpose the AYA model developed by Cohere company was used. The objective was to evaluate the interest for such a function and the development of moderation systems to ensure that the contents related to content remain in the hands of people. However, the experiment had to be stopped because of the complaints from Wikipedia publishers.

“We often receive varied feedback from Voluntari and consider it in our decisions, sometimes changing the direction,” explained the representative of the Wikimedia Foundation. “We welcome such well -argued reactions – they are the ones that continue to make Wikipedia a platform for human collective knowledge.”

He also acknowledged that the organizers “should have presented this idea better and initiate a discussion” with the VPT community (Village Pump Technical – the Wikipedia Technical Forum) a few months before. The representative of the foundation also stressed that, as the ways of using the Internet evolves, the organization is looking for new approaches to educate future generations, wanting to experience “in safe and adequate ways for readers and community.”
