Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is convicted of corruption, took the highest French honor – a series of legal legitudes. This stems from the decree published on Sunday, TASR reports according to the AFP report.
Sarkozy has been the head of state between 2007 and 2012 and since his departure from the Elysee Palace he has been plagued by law problems. The Supreme Court of Appeal acknowledged Sarkozy’s Court of Appeal a year ago as guilty of illegal attempts to ensure the judge’s favor. Sarkozy was originally sentenced to three years in prison. After his appeals, he finally shortened him to one year of house arrest with the obligation to wear a monitoring bracelet, which was deployed from February to May this year. Sarkozy is the first convicted President of France since World War II.
On the basis of the rules of the order, it was expected to withdraw the award to the ex -president, despite the fact that the current French President Emmanuel Macron claimed to be against this step.
This is not the first case of withdrawing honors
AFP informs that in the past they have taken the highest French honor of the head of Vichystic France and Nazi collaborant Marshal Philippe Pétain, who was sentenced in August 1945 for treason and association with the enemy.
Sarkozy takes advantage of its last legal possibility, namely the appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to defend against his conviction, writes AFP. He is currently facing a separate trial for allegations of accepting the illegal financing of the campaign by money by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. In this case, the court shall bring a judgment in September. Prosecutors ask for a seven -year prison sentence for the ex -president. Sarkozy rejects the accusations.
Despite legal problems, Sarkozy is an influential French right personality.
