Brazil records 16.3% increase in refuge requests in 2024

Ministry accounted for 68,159 requests, with Venezuelans leading and Cubans in 2nd place

The recorded 68,159 refuge requests in Brazil in 2024, an increase of 16.3% compared to the 58,628 requests of 2023.

The data were released on Friday (13.jun.2025) through the National Report “Refuge in Numbers”. Venezuelans led the requests, followed by Cubans, who presented significant growth.

Cuban citizens’ refugees increased 84.2% over the previous year from 12,101 in 2023 to 22,288 in 2024. The Venezuelans kept the lead with 27,150 requests, while Angolans occupied 3rd place with 3,421 requests.

The report shows that men represented 59.1% of refuge applicants in Brazil in 2024, while women corresponded to 40.9% of the total. People forced to leave their countries for persecution motivated by race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion, as well as situations of wars and conflicts, are considered refugees.

Between 2015 and 2024, Brazil received 454,165 requests for refuge, 82.6% of this total from Venezuelans, Cubans, Haitians and Angolans. Requests came from people from 175 different countries.

By the end of 2024, Brazil accounted for 156,612 people officially recognized as refugees, an increase of 9.5% compared to 142,980 records of the previous year. In 2024, the Conare (National Refugee Committee) recognized 13,632 people as refugees.

Venezuelans concentrated most of the recognitions (93.1%), followed by citizens of Afghanistan, Colombia and Syria.
