The Russian government said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump was right in claiming that it was a big mistake to expel Russia from the group of eight in 2014, but that G7 was no longer important to Russia and seemed “quite useless” now.
Trump said at the summit of the seven group in Canada on Monday (16), that the G8 missed Russia expelled in 2014 after the country.
“It was a big mistake,” said the US leader, adding that he believed that President Vladimir Putin had not been expelled from the Leader Club.
According to him, Putin “basically does not even speak to the people who expelled him, and I agree with him.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “We agreed with President Trump: it was a big mistake to exclude Russia from the G8 format.”
He stated that the group had “lost the practical importance” to Russia, given the situation of world matters.
“Given the decline of the global economy, given all the trends observed in group countries and, of course, in the context of, for example, formats such as G20, G7 seems monotonous and quite useless,” Peskov said.
