Calgary, Canada (Folhapress)-The G7, a group that brings together some of the world’s leading economies, said in a statement released at dawn on Tuesday (17) that the Middle East and that the country “can never have a nuclear weapon.”
The G7 is made up of Canada, which hosts the group’s summit this year, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The European Union is also part.
“We G7 leaders reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we claim that Israel has the right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for Israel’s security,” says an excerpt from the statement.
The group also points to the importance of protecting civilians in the face of the increase in the number of dead on both sides. “Iran is the main source of instability and terror in the region. We have been consistently clear in claiming that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the statement continues. The group also urges that the resolution of the crisis leads to a “big bass of hostilities in the Middle East” and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Finally, the statement states that countries will remain vigilant to implications for international energy markets and that they will act to protect stability.
Earlier, on Monday (16), the American press reported that there was a draft of the statement, but that US President Donald Trump did not intend to sign it. The statement issued at dawn, however, had the endorsement of the Republican. Shortly after signing the statement, Trump embarked on a helicopter and left the summit a day earlier than expected to devote his attention to the conflict between Israel and Iran, according to the White House.
Since last Friday (13), Israel has been bombing against military and nuclear facilities in Iran, killing important scientists and commanders, which led Tehran to respond with drones and missiles launched against Israeli territory. Although he said for weeks that he preferred diplomacy, Trump expressed support for Tel Aviv’s attacks, saying that Iran should have accepted their conditions.
His representative, Steve Witkoff, came to meet five times with Iranian authorities, but according to Trump, efforts did not thrive. Postering to the official G7 photo before dinner, the US president justified his early departure saying that he had to “go back” as soon as he could. “I wish I could stay until tomorrow, but they understand, this is great,” he said.
