The UK legislators voted on Tuesday (17) for the decriminalization of abortion for pregnant women.
A overwhelming majority has voted to invalidate the Victorian era legislation that enables a woman to interrupt pregnancy in England and Wales, although medical professionals who help interrupt pregnancy and certain limits are still breaking the law.
Currently, after the first 24 weeks of pregnancy is illegal in these two UK countries.
In addition to this period, it is allowed in certain circumstances, such as when the mother’s life is at risk.
Although the interruption of pregnancy is common in England and Wales, women who do it out of existing restrictions face the threat of criminal investigation, prison, process and even prison.
Tuesday’s vote (17)-which changes a bill on policing and crime-seeks to remove these threats.
But it needs to be approved by both chambers of the British Parliament before becoming law.
The vast majority of British believes that women should have the second YouGov surveys done since 2019.
The last, held in April, showed that 88% of respondents supported the measure.
