With the euro 'high', there is vacation that leave (almost) 'for free': be aware of these destinations

Planning vacation abroad can be a challenge when the budget is limited. Among the flights, accommodation and expenses at destination, any euro spared makes a difference. With the approximation of the high season, a new analysis points out which destinations where the Portuguese can enjoy more for less: the appreciation of the euro.

According to Fintech Ebury, the appreciation of the euro in the face of several foreign currencies allowed us to identify destinations in which the purchasing power of European tourists increased.

The analysis considered the currency evolution between June 2024 and June 2025, crossing the data with the inflation levels of each country.

Chamber variations influence vacation decisions

According to the same source, the exchange rate is a factor that can make tour packages more accessible or more expensive.

When the euro values, tour operators can negotiate more advantageous prices, reflecting on the final cost for the consumer. The opposite also applies.

Writes the publication that, in addition to direct spending on destination, such as meals, transportation or monuments, exchange rate fluctuation also influences the price of organized flights, accommodation and excursions.

Where the euro is worth this summer

Ebury has identified five destinations where the euro had a real gain of purchasing power last year. The list is led by Mexico, where Portuguese tourists now have +10.9% purchasing power compared to the same period.

Brazil comes in second place, with an increase of +8.4%, followed by the United States, with +4.8%. Also in the Dominican Republic the euro gained strength, with an increase of +2.8%. Cape Verde remained stable, without loss or significant gains.

These values consider not only exchange rate evolution, but also local inflation, making the analysis closer to the reality felt by consumers.

We recommend:

Destinations to avoid, at least for now

On the other hand, there are countries where the euro has lost value, which means potentially more expensive vacation. Explains the site that, in destinations such as Japan, Egypt, Thailand, Morocco or Tunisia, the European currency devalued compared to local currencies.

This retreat in purchasing power implies that the same euros today buy less than a year in these countries. In high inflation contexts, this difference can be even more pronounced in the goods and services sought by tourists.

Economic factors are increasingly weighing the choice

Fintech stresses that these variations, sometimes uncomposed at first glance, can significantly impact the destination decision.

For those traveling with family or planning prolonged vacations, gain or loss of purchasing power can represent hundreds of euros.

It also adds that the euro strong in certain geographies allows consumers to explore more activities at destination, choose better accommodation or prolong their stay without exceeding the budget.

Useful information for those who have not yet chosen where to go

The list can serve as the basis for more conscious decisions when booking the holidays. Tourists attentive to currency and inflationary conditions can take greater party from their resources and avoid unpleasant surprises in the destination.

This analysis assumes particular importance in 2025, in a context of unequal economic recovery between countries and accentuated fluctuations in currency markets.

Comparing and simulating it remains a good strategy

In addition to consulting purchasing power data, Fintech advises consumers to simulate budgets based on local currency and average daily costs of major tourist destinations. Comparing real prices remains the best way to realize where money makes more.
