BRICS summit in Rio will be absence of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin

Scheduled on July 6 and 7, in Rio de Janeiro, the BRICS summit will take place without the presence of China, Xi Jinping, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, reported interlocutors of the Planalto Palace. The list with confirmations from the other guests has not yet been released by the Brazilian government.

Putin’s absence was already expected, as he is the target of an arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to the deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Russian President will participate in the Video Conference Summit meeting and will send to Brazil the Chancellor Sergey Lavrov.

Already the president of China will be replaced by Prime Minister Li Qiang. Xi Jinping and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have been close and met twice in recent months. In May, Lula made a state visit to the Asian country.

BRICS is made up of eleven countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran. The Middle East crisis, especially the situation in the Gaza Strip and the recent attacks from Israel and the United States to the Iranian territory, will feature a special highlight at the Rio event.

In the presidency of the group in 2025, Brazil has six priorities: global health cooperation; trade, investments and finances; Climate change; Governance of Artificial Intelligence; Multilateral Architecture of Peace and Security; and BRICS institutional development.
