According to the president of the institution, Dilma Rousseff, the Portfolio de Investimentos focuses on infrastructure and logistics
The former president, the current head of the Brics banks, said on Saturday (5.Jul.2025) that the financial institution approved 29 investment projects in Brazil, totaling almost $ 7 billion since the bank’s creation in 2016. Of this amount, $ 4 billion have been paid.
In total, the NBD (Novo Development Bank) funded 122 investment projects in its history, at a cost of US $ 40 billion. US $ 22.2 billion have already been disbursed. The projects in Brazil represent 17.5% of the total invested, percentage considered high by the bank.
According to Dilma, investments focus on the areas of infrastructure, logistics, energy transition and artificial intelligence.
Dilma attended a conversation with journalists during the 10th annual meeting of NBD (Novo Development Bank), known as Banco dos Brics. She participates in the block finance meeting. Both meetings are held in the river.
The bank’s president stated that the financial institution has as one of its main objectives to expand financing and fundraising in local currencies to reduce exposure to interest and exchange rate volatility and strengthen the domestic capital market.
“This item is very important to the bank, we have to do two things. We have to provide investment support that can add sovereign loans, the private and ensure that this is done at the lowest possible risk”, these.
Dilma stated that the bank has an obligation to reduce the risk to meet the goals and obligations it has with the private sector. He said that the use of local currencies is fundamental in this regard.
“That’s why we are looking for local currencies because we have to meet the goal, but we cannot force the private investor to take the resource at great risk. So we have an obligation to reduce the risk to meet the goal with the private sector,” stated.
Dilma, however, said she did not see a worldwide market decalarization. For her, there is more use of local currencies in commerce between countries, but the dollar continues as a value reserve asset.
The president (PT) is one of the main advocates of the expansion of trade between countries in currencies other than the dollar. In a speech on Friday (4.Jul) at the NDB meeting, the petista stated that alternatives had to be found to the US currency in transactions between the BRICS members.
He mentioned the theme twice. In the 1st, he cited financial transactions in local currencies, but in the 2nd, he said he needed to advance the discussion of a new currency. The question, however, is the subject of resistance between the bloc’s own countries. In January, US President Donald Trump (Republican), which would rate BRICS members 100% if the group created its own currency.
China and Russia also endorse the expansion of the use of local currencies within the block as a way to reduce their dependencies in relation to the dollar. The movement is especially concerned with Russians, which have been the target of financial sanctions by the United States and European countries.
Bank expansion
Dilma stated that the bank’s council of governors, formed by the ministers of finance of the countries that are part of the institution, approved the entry of Uzbekistan and Colombia in the Bank’s members.
Currently the NDB has in its summit the founding countries of BRICS: Brazil, China, Russia, India and South Africa.
And there are 5 other associated countries: Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Uruguay and Algeria. According to Dilma, the expansion of the block is one of the priorities of its management.
