What if a doctor has an AI assistant like 'second opinion'? Accuracy to identify patterns and diagnoses is superior to that of humans

“AI has been trained with architectures that have been developed for many years, and with a much higher number of images than those a person can absorb for all his lifetime,” explains João Reis in the podcast “The Future of the Future”

Generative artificial intelligence is increasingly present in everyday life and the medical area is no exception. Medtiles is a Portuguese startup that also wants to bring this revolution to medical care, improving the diagnosis and analysis, but also the continuous formation of health professionals.

Sandra Moreira, CEO and founder of the company, and João Reis, AI consultant, exploit in the podcast “The Future of the Future” as artificial intelligence can be a powerful ally in the level of education and deepening knowledge in the area of medicine, but also in the democratization of access to knowledge.

The artificial intelligence expert, also a researcher at the University of Porto, explains that today, the accuracy of these tools in exam analysis, such as resonances or tacs, is already superior to that of humans. “AI has been trained with architectures that have been developed for many years, and with a much higher amount of images than a person, in particular a neurologist or other clinician, can absorb for a lifetime.”

Currently, Medtiles has available an application called tutor for the use of doctors. Sandra Moreira, also a doctor, says that development “has started from a very practical problem (…) that has to do with the difficulty that exists in the transition between what is the acquisition of knowledge and information, which grows almost exponentially every day, and the practical application of this knowledge”.

The tutor is part of a virtual assistant with healed and pre-selected information based on papers and scientific sources, but also with other features, one of the most important is the possibility of training “with interactive clinical cases”, allowing doctors to do tests without “using real sick, but a simulator that offers more similar scenarios with those who are the real scenarios that will appear in everyday life”.

Find out how this technology works and how it can improve the operation of the health system in the weekly episode of the future of the future, now available on podcast platforms.
