With the early Amazonian summer, the Juruá River enters another Piracema cycle – when several fish species rise to the river for reproduction. This Friday (11), the movement on the margins was intense, with fishermen taking advantage of the large presence of Mandim, very common fish in the region and valued both in artisanal fishing and in the feeding of riverside families.
Piracema favors the formation of large shoals, making the mandin more accessible and abundant. The ease of capturing it at this stage attracts fishermen from different points of the municipality, which gather on the banks of the river to take advantage of the moment of abundance.
In addition to Mandim, other species are also being spotted and captured during Piracema, reaffirming the ecological and economic importance of the Juruá River as one of Acre’s main natural breeding sites. The reproduction of fish in this period is fundamental for the renewal of fishing inventories and for the subsistence of various communities in the region.
Environmental authorities warn, however, to the need to respect the limits of fishing and avoid predatory practices, ensuring the preservation of the ecosystem and the continuity of this vital phenomenon for the biodiversity of Juruá.
