Chelsea’s new generation play scored two goals and assisted the third, being elected the best player of the match
With a decisive performance by Cole Palmer, Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 on Sunday (13) and won the title of the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup with 32 teams. The final was played at the Metlife Stadium, outside New York, against 81,118 fans-among them, US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania. Palmer, 23, scored two goals and assisted the third, being elected the best player of the match. Cold and accurate, justified the nickname “Cold Palmer”, celebrated by the fans. Revealed by Manchester City, midfielder changed clubs in 2023 seeking more space-and reached immediate protagonism in Chelsea.
The first two goals came out in the first half. At 22 minutes, Palmer received at the entrance of the area and finished his left foot in the opposite corner of Donnarumma. The second, at 30, was similar: torn from the right, dribble in Lucas Beraldo and new cross kick, with no chance for the goalkeeper. At 43, the Englishman appeared as a waiter: it tore at speed and found the Brazilian João Pedro Livre to mark for coverage and close the score.
Victory developed Palmer as the main piece of Chelsea’s new generation. In his first season for the club, he scored 22 goals and 11 assists at the Premier League, and shook the networks in the Euro 2024 final when England lost to Spain. It was also decisive in winning the Conference League in May by giving two assists at the turn of Betis.
Manchester United fan base and childhood fan, Palmer left Guardiola in search of more minutes and found in Chelsea the ideal scenario to shine. This Sunday, his talent unbalanced the decision against the favorite PSG, led by Dembélé, and secured the club’s first world title in the new format of the competition.
