The Romanian Parliament refused to pronounce distrust of Prime Minister Bolojan. Fiscal measures to reduce the deficit cause contradictory reactions.

On Monday, the Romanian Parliament did not support the opposition proposal to pronounce Prime Minister Ilia’s mistrust in connection with the package of fiscal measures to increase taxes in the country and thus reduce the budget deficit. It is currently the highest of the Member States of the European Union, writes TASR based on Agerpres and Bloomberg reports.

For the declaration of distrust of the coalition government of four parties – the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Union of Rescue of Romania (USR), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) – voted at a joint meeting of a 464 -member double -chamber parliament of 134 deputies and four.

Voting in parliament

Last week, 131 representatives of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), the Parties of Young People (Pot) and SOS Romania submitted the proposal in Parliament last week. A total of 349 deputies and senators participated in the meeting, with 233 votes needed for approval. MEPs said that their participation will ensure the quorum but will not vote.

The opposition parties call the current pro -European government extremist and oppose its measures to reduce the budget deficit. “They destroyed the country and now they force Romanians to pay – away with the hypocritical government,” the group of deputies said behind the proposal.

Political instability

Romania found itself in political instability after the court annulled the results of the first round of the November 2024 presidential election for suspicion of Russian interference and manipulations of the election campaign on social networks that allegedly failed candidate Calin Georgesca. In May’s repeated elections, the pro -European candidate Nicušor Dan, who appointed Prime Minister Ilia Bolojan at the end of June, won.
