Are you going to the beach this summer? Beware of prices: There are new rules that will change everything

Neither Portugal nor Spain: British tourists surprise with new destinations for 2025

This summer, going to the beach can come with fewer surprises in the wallet. The government is preparing a concierge that establishes maximum prices for goods and services considered essential on concession beaches, such as water bottles, cafes, sandwiches and awnings or tents. The measure aims to ensure equitable access to the bathing public space, after complaints of inflated values in some areas of the Portuguese coast.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the decision was made after inspections made by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), which traveled about 45 kilometers of beach coast between Tróia and Melides. During these actions, situations were identified where a awning cost 300 euros a day and simple coffees reached five euros per unit, according to the same source.

Prices under surveillance in the sand

To lock these abuses, a maximum price list will be created applicable to essential goods sold on the concession beaches. The table should be visible to users and include at least one option accessible for each product category. Products considered “premium” will continue to exist, but cannot be the only choice available.

The inspection will be in charge of the APA and the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE), which will work on the ground with mobile teams. Municipalities will also have skills to apply fines between 250 and 3,000 euros in case of non -compliance. It is also planned to create a line dedicated to complaints, with the objective of facilitating civic participation.

Measure wants to guarantee “beaches for everyone”

Despite the intervention in prices, the amount paid by the concessionaires to the State will remain unchanged in 2025. However, the government admits that the next competitions for granting bathing zones will include social responsibility criteria. The intention is to ensure that beaches remain a public space, accessible and regulated based on community service principles.

Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho stresses that “beaches are public goods” and that there must be a balance between different types of supply. “There may be better and more expensive awnings alongside others cheaper. There has to be reasonableness,” he said, quoted by several communication agencies.

Application will be gradual

The ordinance should be published in and the application will be made progressively over the summer months. The impact of the measure will be evaluated on practice by the authorities, but also by users, who can follow whether the new limits are met, and if the beach trip remains a pleasure or becoming a avoidable luxury.

According to the government, this intervention does not intend to control prices in the strict sense, but ensure that there is always a fair and transparent option within the reach of any citizen. Summer will dictate if the new rules translate into real changes in the bathing experience of the Portuguese.
