Turkey continues to support the idea of a two -state solution in Cyprussaid the Turkish President on Sunday Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the visit of its northern part. He called on the international community to accept the existing division of this island in the Mediterranean, AFP wrote.

Cyprus is divided from the invasion of the Turkish army to the north of the island in 1974 into the southern Greek -language part, managed by the internationally recognized government, and the self -proclaimed North Cyprus Turkish Republic recognized only by Turkey. While the Greek Cypriot Greeks are striving for a federal volume of two ethnic groups, the Turks are pushing for a two -state solution and official recognition of the sovereignty of Northern Cyprus.

“We fully support the vision based on a two -state solution,” Erdogan said during a visit to Northern Cyprus on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the invasion of the Turkish troops on the island. “It is time for the international community to reconcile with the fact on the spot,” he added. Over the past years, several attempts have appeared to achieve a compromise solution to Cyprus. The last time this happened in 2017 in Switzerland. However, since then, formal talks have not been renewed between the parties.

Informal negotiations were convened in March by Secretary -General António Guterres. At that time, the representatives agreed on several steps, among other things on the opening of the border crossing points, the creation of the Youth Technical Committee and other initiatives in the buffer zone and on the entire island.

Erdogan visited Northern Cyprus just days after Guterres said meetings between the leaders of both parties divided by the island in the UN, New York’s headquarters, were “constructive”. However, according to him, there are questions about border crossing points.

On Sunday, the Turkish President also called on the end of the isolation of the self -appointed North Cyprus Republic. “The Northern Cyprus Republic should be established by diplomatic, political and economic relations, and the injustice that the Turkish Cypriots have been tolerated for decades must finally end,” Erdogan’s dodal.
