For the first time since 2020, there is no favorite to win the Olympia title at Classic Physique today. This is because Chris Bumtead, a hexac champion of the tournament, announced his stage retirement late last year. For Gabriel Zancanelli, the first Brazilian bodybuilder in history to qualify for the planet’s most important championship in this category, the clash must be starring Mike Sommerfeld, Terrence Ruffin and Ramon Dino.
“It is almost everyone the same up there, the throne is open,” says the professional athlete in an exclusive interview. He also says that, because of last season and the last competitions, he considers the German favorite, “but those who know the potential of our dinosaur knows” that the dispute is not out of reach for the Acre.
“It’s the best genetics I’ve ever seen. I’ve been running the world competing and I’ve never seen anyone like Ramon. I said earlier that if it was to bet money I would bet on Mike and Ramon front – considering what the referees are asking for the category. But in Pittsburgh, in that ‘guest posing’ where they were side by side.”
In addition to Dino, the Minas Gerais athlete also mentioned Matheus Menegate as a Brazilian Classic Physique potential: “It was a surprise in last year’s Olympia, impressed everyone. It’s a new guy in the category, in the professional league, in the sport. His changes will always be very significant.”
Last year, the two met both in Olympia and Texas Pro. While Menegate got a better place in the “World Cup” of bodybuilding, Zancanelli won the show in which they starred in a direct dispute. About the rivalry with his colleague – both, like Ramon, have as bodybuilding coach Fabrício Pacholok – he jokes: “I won him and will win again when I get back.”
Currently, the bodybuilder is in the recovery phase as a result of an injury that suffered in the pectoral. Forced rest, however, can be beneficial in the long run, according to him. “I can come back worse or better, because I have never been so long without competing, so I don’t know how my body will react. Comparing current photos with my last ‘off’ periods, I can see some improvements that I couldn’t see before. I think it was because I have rested.
