José Mourinho is about to return to Estádio da Luz, now as a coach of Fenerbahçe, to play another edition of Eusebio Cup. But before this reunion, the Portuguese coach revealed a curious detail about the first edition of the race, held in 2008.
At the time at the service of Inter Milan, Mourinho led the Italian team in the victory against Benfica. What was not known so far is that the trophy of this achievement has been kept at home for 17 years. In an interview with Sport TV, the coach explained how it all happened.
“The first cup was Inter that won it, but the cup is in my house! I asked the president of Inter. For me, it has a different meaning than for the club. For them it was just a pre-season trophy, without great relevance. For me, it was the king’s cup,” Mourinho said, in a clear reference to Eusébio, a legendary football figure that gives name to the competition.
Setúbal’s coach also added a note of affection: “If Dona Flora or some of the grandchildren or granddaughters asked me, I gave it.”
