Action, presented by the Justice Department, opposes the so-called ‘city-city laws’, which limit local police collaboration with immigration authorities
The government of the president of the United States, processed the city of This Thursday (24) because of their immigration policies, accusing local authorities of “obstructing” the application of federal law. The action, presented by the Justice Department, opposes the so-called “city-city laws”, which limit local police collaboration with immigration authorities. “New York City has long been in the forefront of interference in the application of immigration laws in this country. Its efforts to hinder the application of the federal migratory law only intensified,” the government’s lawyers wrote in the judicial document.
Thursday’s demand is part of Trump’s climbing antimigrant policies and adds to other similar actions that the federal government has already presented against localities led by Democratic Party politicians, such as Los Angeles, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey and even New York State. The Justice Department stated that New York’s “sanctuary” policies “make it difficult” the work of immigration agents and create public security problems in the city.
These policies have been promoted by different municipalities since 1989 and more recently expanded in 2014, when Mayor Bill de Blasio expanded them to limit communication between migratory agents and local arrests and closed an office of the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) in Rikers, the city’s largest arrest.
Defenders of this type of normative argue that they are necessary to improve the safety of communities, as they allow immigrants to report crimes or abuse without fear of being deported, and collaborates with the authorities. On average, 35.5 crimes are committed less for every 10,000 people in the counties with sanctuary policies compared to those who do not have them, according to data from the New York Immigration Coalition.
