Strike in Menzies causes delays and 20 flights canceled at Lisbon airport

Ana advises passengers with flights operated by Menzies, a company responsible for scale assistance services, to previously contact their airline to confirm the state of the flight before heading to the airport.

This Saturday’s strike of SPDH/Menzies workers (formerly Grindforce) has so far caused “some delays” and the cancellation of 20 flights at Lisbon airport, has advanced to Lusa to Ana – Aeroportos de Portugal.

“Due to the strike in Menzies (‘handling’), so far, there have been some delays and 20 canceled flights (10 arrivals and 10 matches) at Humberto Delgado airport,” said a source of the airport manager.

Ana advises passengers with flights operated by Menzies, a company responsible for scale assistance services, to previously contact the respective airline to confirm the state of the flight before heading to the airport.

In the middle of the morning, the leader of the Metallurgical and related Industries Union (Sima) Carlos Araújo pointed out that the strike mobilized today, “for the first time in at least 10 years”, employees of Porto Airport.

“On the Porto scale, 10 years ago there was no strikes and people strike,” he emphasized.

Carlos Araújo also anticipated that today are even more flights from only passengers, without luggage or load, after the 25 when this happened until 18:00 on Friday.

In a statement, the Union also accused SPDH/Menzies of being “flagling the right to strike” to try to “neutralize the effects of stoppage”, using “illegal practices” such as “forced anticipation of shifts and working days”, “replacement of strikers with workers of temporary work companies” and “abusive scales”.

“The Sima is collecting evidence of these illegalities and will submit formal complaints to the authority for labor conditions (ACT) and the Public Prosecution Service, requiring the accountability of Menzies/SPDH leaders,” he says.

Called by Simima and the Transport Union (ST), the protest started at 00:00 Friday and extended until 24:00 on Monday.

This is the first of five four-day strikes scheduled for weekends until early September.

In August, the strike periods are scheduled for 08 to 11, 15 to 18, 22 to 25 and 29 August to September 1st.

Among the workers’ claims are the end of base salaries below the national minimum wage, the payment of night hours, better salary conditions and the maintenance of access to the parking park in the same way.

The Arbitral Tribunal has determined minimum services to assist all flights related to critical safety situations, emergency, military, state, and TAP flights on ‘Night-Stop’ on a European scale, as well as regular connections between Lisbon and the Azores and Madeira, and between Port and the archipelagos.
