The president of the United States, arrived last Friday (25) at Postwick airport, near Glasgow and starts a private visit of four days to Scotland, during which he will visit his two golf complexes and will have meetings with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Prime Minister of Keir Strmer. After the arrival of Air Force One, witnessed by a crowd of curious gathered in the immediate vicinity of the airport, the US representative moved by car to a resort in Turnberry, on the Scottish West Coast, where he will spend the weekend.

Upon descending from the official plane, the president was received by the US ambassador to the United Kingdom and the British minister to Scotland, Ian Murray. Speaking to the press, Trump said meetings with von der Leyen on Sunday and Stmerer on Monday to address the tariff agreement between the two countries, “will be very good.” The European Commission has confirmed that von der Leyen will travel Trump’s “by invitation” without giving more details for now.

“After a call with the US President, we agreed to meet Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic business relations and how we can keep them strong,” he wrote on social networks. Trump threatens to impose, from August 1, 30% tariffs on European imports if a new commercial pact is not closed.

Upon arrival in Scotland, he reiterated that there are “50% chances or less” to reach an agreement with the European Union before the deadline expired. From Turnberry, the president will go to his other golf complex in Menie, Aberdeenshire County, where, according to him, his son will inaugurate a new field of 18 holes. Trump revealed to the press today that it was the late Scottish actor Sean Connery who got the permissions for him to open this complex. It is expected that on Tuesday he receives Scotland main minister John Swinney, who said he intends to raise “global and humanitarian issues,” including the suffering in the Gaza Strip.

This is Trump’s first visit to the United Kingdom since its reelection in November 2024, and precedes a state visit that he will hold from 17 to 19 September, when he will stay at Windsor castle with King Charles III. His arrival in Scotland motivated the convening of protests this Saturday in the cities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, which activated one of the largest police operations since the death of Elizabeth II by 2022.
