US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia and Thailand to end an armed conflict in their border area, which has so far claimed at least 33 victims. He compared him to the May conflict between Pakistan and India, in which after four days of fighting the United States mediated a ceasefire. TASR informs this based on the AFP report.
“I just talked to the Prime Minister of Cambodia to stop the war with Thailand,” Trump stated in the Truth Social social network. “I now call the reigning Prime Minister Thailand to ask him for a ceasefire and the end of the war, which is currently raging there … It reminds me very much of the conflict between Pakistan and India, which has been successfully completed,” added Trump.
A moment later, in the next post to Truth Social, he said he had a “very good interview” with Thai Prime Minister Pchhuma Véčaja. “Thailand, like Cambodia, wants an immediate ceasefire and peace. Now I will give this message to Prime Minister Cambodia. After talking to both parties, it seems that the ceasefire, peace and prosperity are clear. We will see soon!” added the US President.
In the following contribution, Trump confirmed that the prime ministers of both countries agreed to accelerated ceasefire negotiations. “They agreed to meet immediately and quickly (the agreement on) ceasefire and finally aiming! It was an honor to negotiate with the two countries. They have a long and rich history and culture. Hopefully they will come together for many years,” stated the president.
A long -term tension between neighboring countries of Southeast Asia escalated on Thursday to armed collisions in the border area to which engaged fighters, artillery, tanks and ground units. Both sides blame each other for the first to attack. The reigning Thai Prime Minister Véčajaj warned on Friday morning that armed struggles could grow into war. Cambodia on Friday night called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
Both countries have a long -lasting dispute over the definition of a border in the area known as an emerald triangle. In May, he grew into cross -border struggles with one victim in the ranks of Thai soldiers. Since then, both parties have taken retaliatory measures. Thailand has limited cross -border contact and Cambodia stopped the import of some raw materials and foods. The new conflict broke out only shortly after the countries have expelled their diplomatic representatives.
