The Federal Supreme Court (STF) began on Monday (28) to the interrogations of the defendants of the call. The testimonials began under tension: Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case, determined that the accused military did not use uniform during the hearing, which caused protests from the defenses.
The group brings together nine military personnel and an agent of the Federal Police accused of articulating attacks on the electoral system, democracy and the integrity of public authorities. Part of them would also have participated in meetings to plan violent actions, including murders, aiming to create the environment for an institutional rupture.
Uniform vetoed by decision of Moraes
The prohibition of uniform use during the interrogations was informed by the STF judge at the beginning of the hearing, after the lieutenants Rafael Martins and Hélio Ferreira Lima appear uniformed. The defenses claimed that there is no legal provision for this restriction and requested the postponement of the hearings, which was not accepted.
“This is a determination of the rapporteur minister. The accusation is against military, not against the army as a whole,” the judge said by justifying the decision.
Rafael Martins’ defense suggested suspending the hearing, while the magistrate recommended that a change of clothes be arranged. Until the last update of the session, the interrogations had not yet been started.
The measure was interpreted as a way to prevent the symbolic association between the Armed Forces and the investigated crimes, reinforcing the STF’s argument that the scammer acts were the individual initiative of their participants, and non -institutional.
