The Italian island of Sardinia has been struggling with extensive fires in the past 24 hours. The worst situation was in the village of Villasimius in the south of the island, where the flames in the meantime got close to the beach, TASR reports according to Monday’s report by APA.
The fire almost completely blocked escape routes for holidaymakers. Their evacuation by sea was complicated by the strong wind of the Mistral. Firefighters therefore deployed a helicopter on the evacuation. Many holidaymakers tried to get to their cars, but many of them have already destroyed the fire.
Two helicopters also helped in the extinguishing, two firefighting teams fought on the ground.
