The Minister of Foreign Affairs, said on Monday (28) that countries must apply with determination to international law in the face of “charged allegations” of genocide in. “Calvary Palestinians face is a test to our collective commitment to international law, humanitarian law and human rights. When confronted with credible genocide allegations, invoking international law is not sufficient. We must apply it with determination,” said the government chancellor.
Since the beginning of the war, President Lula has been criticized by the Jewish community for his position in conflict and over. Lula came to be considered an undesirable presence in the country because he even compared Israeli actions in Gaza, detonated by the October 7 attacks perpetrated by the terrorist group, to Nazism, which is considered offensive by the Jews. Days ago, the chancellor announced during an interview with TV Catari Al-Jazeera that Brazil decided to formally entered the open process against Israel by Genocide, initially proposed by South Africa. The case runs at the UN International Court (CIJ) in The Hague. The country has not yet formalized the decision to intervene in the process.
In this Monday’s speech, Vieira recalled that the Court “established clear guidelines” to countries, which include “not recognizing the illegal situation created by the presence of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, differentiating in all relations with Israel between its territory and the occupied Palestinian territory, to refrain from any action that can assist or contribute to the maintenance of occupation and to guarantee the right of the Palestinian people and the right of the Palestinian and the right to self-determination and the right to the fourth Geneva Convention ”.
The high -level meeting was chaired by Saudi Arabia. Brazil has co -president with Senegal a debate table on promoting respect for international law.
The Lula government chancellor reported part of the discussions and listed a number of measures that United Nations could immediately adopt against the Israeli government. According to him, the discussion covered by Brazil was advised to answer the following questions: “What actions can states adopt to promote and ensure compliance with international law? What accountability mechanisms can be activated to address relevant illegal actions, policies and practices and ensure preventive measures?
According to the minister, there were more than 50 answers from several “stakeholders”, which in turn generated 96 concrete proposals grouped in five areas: diplomatic and political; Arms trade; economic accountability and repair; and monitoring. He then listed some of the suggestions discussed:
- Recognition of the state of Palestine and support for its admission as a full member of the UN
- Maintenance of the legal distinction between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory
- Opposition to the annexation and the expansion of the settlements
- Guaranteeing protection for humanitarian workers, including UNWRA (UN Agency for Palestinian refugees agency who was accused of being “infiltrated” by Hamas terrorists and led to the resignation of employees for participation in the attacks of October 7, 2023)
- Support for civil society and human rights advocates
- Imposition of specific sanctions against violent settlers
- Legal measures of retaliation for serious violations
The minister mentioned that these are “legal actions that states can take now.”
“The credibility of the international legal order depends on its non -selective application. What is necessary now is political will and a robust process of monitoring this conference. Let us transform the law into action and action into justice and peace,” the chancellor urged.
