The president of the United States, Donald Trumpwill suspend from August 29 the exception of tariffs for low -cost commercial shipments worldwide, the White House said Wednesday.
The decision, announced on Wednesday through an executive order, will impose Import taxes towards the US of goods for values below 800 dollars.
All products that arrive in the US through the international postal system will be subject, from the end of August, to a Tariff rate calculated according to the cost of each package and the country from which it comesexplained the US government
The Trump administration justified this decision ensuring that low -cost shipments exempt taxes in the US are subject to “less controls” than traditional imports and that the exception, standing since the 30s, is a “Legal Vacuum”.
These shipments, argued the White House, “can represent risks to health and national and economic security.”
Between 2015 and 2024, the volume of small shipments that arrived in the United States increased from 134 million to more than 1,360 million packages, according to data from the US Customs and Border Protection data (CBP, in English).
On May 2, Trump eliminated the exception of tariffs to small shipments from China, especially affecting online sales giants such as Shein and Temu.
