Partnership with Private Energy Producer ensured the neutralization of emissions for the 5th year in a row; Tournament held in February moved R $ 170 million

For the 5th consecutive year, the one, held in February 2025, neutralized 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions. The 11th edition of the Tennis Tournament, the only ATP 500 in South America, compensated for over 1,800 tons of equivalent CO2 (TCO₂E), surpassing the figures of 2024.

The initiative is carried out in partnership with Engie, a private producer of electricity, and uses carbon credits generated by the Jirau hydroelectric dam in Rondônia, a project recorded in the UN (Clean Development Mechanism) mechanism. The plant has as its shareholders the ENGIE itself (40%), Eletrobras (40%) and Mitsui (20%).

Compensated emissions include the assembly and disassembly operations of the event structure, electricity consumption in the Brazilian Jockey Club and land and air displacements of athletes and public.

“Rio Open has missions that go far beyond high performance sports and seek to positively impact our society”, Said the director general of the tournament, Marcia Casz. “We will continue to work so that the growth of the event is always aligned with our values and the commitment to sustainability.”

The, responsible for the carbon credits used at the event, highlighted the relevance of the action in line with its global strategy. “This initiative is aligned with our purpose, which is to act to accelerate the transition to a neutral carbon economy through reduced energy consumption and more sustainable solutions, which includes the reduction and neutralization of emissions,” stated the company’s country manager in Brazil, Eduardo Sattamini.

Since 2020, the partnership with the Energy Company has allowed the neutralization of over 6,000 tons of CO2 on the Open River.

“It is a source of great pride for Jirau Energia to be part of another chapter of this important journey for sustainability alongside Engie and Rio Open”, said Jirau Energia CEO Edson Silva.

In addition to the neutralization of emissions, the event maintains the Rio Open Green platform, with a series of environmental initiatives. Among the actions of 2025 are:

  • collection of more than 21 tons of recyclable waste;
  • Reduction of plastics and preference for reusable materials;
  • Use of returnable glasses in bars and ecological bags in the official store;
  • reuse of racket strings and cap collection;
  • Donation of balls and surplus uniforms to social projects.

Economic impact

The tournament also broke records off the court. The 11th edition recorded a public of 69,350 people in 9 days of event. La Boutique, the official tournament store, sold 7,500 products. The impact on the local economy exceeded R $ 170 million, with reflections in the tourism, hotel, gastronomy, transportation and commerce sectors.

Champion in Simples, Argentine Sebastián Báez won his 1st title in Rio. In pairs, Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo became the 1st pair 100% Brazilian to win the tournament. Rio Open has already received big names in the world tennis and pledged champions such as Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Cuevas, Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie.
