In a note, Itamaraty praised the initiative of Canada, Malta, Portugal and the United Kingdom and asked other nations to do the same
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil This Friday (1st.ago.2025) which received with satisfaction the intention of Western countries to recognize the legitimacy of the Palestinian State. Canada, Malta, Portugal and the United Kingdom intend to officialize the measure during the 80th UN General Assembly (United Nations), from September 9.
“Pronouncements reflect the growing engagement of the international community in favor of concrete actions to materialize the solution of the 2 states, the only possible way to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.”said the Brazilian government, reinforcing the country’s position to resolve the conflict with Israel, which has lasted almost 2 years.
The process of recognition by these 4 countries adds to the initiative of France, which announced on July 24 that will formalize the act. At the time, Itamaraty Emmanuel Macron’s country in an official statement.
France, Canada, Malta, Portugal and the United Kingdom can increase adherence to the Palestinian cause in the UN. Currently, more than 140 of the 193 United Nations countries recognize Palestine. The territory is an observing member of the organ, as is the Vatican’s Holy See.
Brazil recognizes the Palestinian Authority since December 2010, still in the 2nd term of the president (PT). The country is accompanied by all of South America and most of Asia and Africa.
United States, Japan, Australia and Western Europe are among the main nations that still resist admitting Palestine as a sovereign state. The US, under the presidency of Donald Trump (Republican), are critical of allied movements for the sake of reception. It was one of the reasons that barred the trade agreement with Canada.
Itamaraty insisted on Friday (1st.ago.2025) that countries that have not yet recognized Palestine so do so as soon as possible. “The Brazilian government […] conclim all countries working for the entry of Palestine as a full member in the United Nations ”says the note.
