US classifies Eduardo Bolsonaro’s conviction as “persecution”

The United States Department of State classified, this Thursday (June 18, 2026), as “persecution” e “legal war” the conviction of the former federal deputy (PL-SP) for .

The 1st Panel of STF Eduardo unanimously, on Tuesday (June 16), for the crime of coercion during the course of the process. According to the decision, the former deputy acted in the United States to try to intimidate the Brazilian Judiciary during the investigation of the criminal case against his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who has been under house arrest since March 2026.

In a note sent to Reutersa State Department spokesperson said the conviction represents “the most recent episode in a pattern of persecution and political use of the judicial system by Brazilian courts against their political opponents”.

The representative of the North American department, led by Marco Rubio, also said that “Political debates must be resolved through democratic elections, not convictions”.

TRUMP CONFUSED BOLSONERS

When talking about the conviction of Eduardo Bolsonaro by the STF for coercion during the process that tried Jair Bolsonaro in the coup plot, the republican confused the former deputy with his brother, (PL), who is a senator and pre-candidate for Planalto. The North American said that “they arrested a Bolsonaro” that was “doing well in the polls.”

Trump was also wrong to say that Eduardo Bolsonaro was arrested. The former federal deputy, self-exiled in the United States, was part of the 1st Panel of the Federal Supreme Court. The score was 4-0.

According to Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the former deputy tried to use sanctions and tariffs applied by the United States as a way to intimidate the Supreme Court and benefit his father. For the rapporteur, the conducts were not simple political demonstrations nor were they protected by freedom of expression or parliamentary activity.

Moraes stated that Eduardo and Paulo Figueiredo took Brazilian court documents to US authorities to try to justify measures against Brazilian authorities. The minister said that the threats were directly related to the trial of Jair Bolsonaro’s criminal case.

FLAVIO’S VISIT TO TRUMP

On May 26, the senator participated in a quick conversation with the US president in Washington. Trump published photographs on his official profile on the Truth Social network. Eduardo Bolsonaro and journalist Paulo Figueiredo were also recorded in the images.

On June 1, the Trump administration proposed a 25% tariff on a broad list of products imported from Brazil. Lula is directly responsible for Flávio and Eduardo for coordinating the application of tariffs, in a move to harm his candidacy for re-election.

The final decision on whether to apply the tariff will be up to Trump. The USTR (Office of the United States Trade Representative) document lists topics such as:

  • Pix;
  • digital commerce;
  • preferential tariffs;
  • fight against corruption
  • intellectual property protection;
  • access to the ethanol market;
  • illegal deforestation.
