Lula's prolonged meeting with military raises questions behind the scenes

The meeting held this week between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Armed Forces commanders extended for almost two hours. According to investigation, the reason for the long conversation was the volume of topics discussed, including internal promotions, budget demands and operational issues of each force.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and the army commanders, General Tomás Paiva; From the Navy, Admiral Marcos Olsen; and Aeronautics, Lieutenant Brigadier Marcelo Damasceno. According to Múcio, the group took the president a series of “problems” faced by the forces. “We discussed our problems, including budget,” said the minister.

The meeting took place at a strategic moment, as two days later the federal government announced the unlocking of R $ 20.7 billion from the Union budget to 2025. From this amount, about R $ 1.92 billion was destined to the Ministry of Defense, which can be interpreted as a direct response to the demands presented at the meeting.

In addition to budget release, the meeting also addressed promotions within the military forces, which traditionally depend on approval by the President of the Republic. The conversation would have occurred in a climate of normality and collaboration, according to sources from Planalto.

The meeting reinforces the dialogue channel between the Executive and the Armed Forces in a moment of attention to the structural and financial needs of military institutions, especially in the face of planning for next year.
