Amid growing international pressure on conflict in Gaza, a wave of western countries signals the intention to recognize the Palestinian state. United Kingdom, Portugal and Canada followed the footsteps of France, which announced their support the previous week, in a movement that increases the diplomatic isolation of the United States on the issue.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza gets worse, with 156 deaths confirmed by hunger and malnutrition, including 90 children. The critical scenario even led the United States to publicly recognize the existence of a food crisis in the region.

Historical context of the Palestinian State

Since 1988, when the organization for the release of Palestine has declared itself as a state, the entity maintains observing state status in the UN, similar to the Vatican. Currently, 147 countries – approximately 75% of UN members – recognize the Palestinian state, with Brazil being part of this group since 2010.

International recognition, however, does not automatically guarantee the effective creation of the state. For this, four fundamental requirements are required: permanent territory, population, government and ability to fulfill international obligations. The territorial dispute with Israel and the internal divisions between the Palestinian authority and Hamas are significant obstacles to the realization of this objective.

Impasse in negotiations

Attempts at a ceasefire agreement face resistance from both Hamas and the Israeli government. The Palestinian group requires the substantial removal of the Israeli military forces of Gaza, while the hard line sectors oppose any agreement that can weaken their political position.

The growing international recognition of the Palestinian State by influential countries, including permanent members of the UN Security Council such as France and increases diplomatic pressure on Israel, which relod US unconditional support only on the international scenario.
