False calls with true numbers: PSP warns of fraud that can steal your data and 'empty' the wallet

There is a scheme that is circulating by phone and can have serious consequences for those who are not aware. Just say certain common words of confirmation in a call to run the risk of seeing the empty bank account without realizing how it happened. Often the victim does not even realize that it is being recorded, as the initial approach can be silent or seem legitimate. The sophistication of the technique is based on manipulating these small confirmations to allow complex and increasingly difficult to detect fraud.

The technique behind the burla

According to the Equaconomist Economic Economic Journal, which specializes in financial and economic topics, the burns resort to calls that seem harmless, including silent or made calls from numbers that simulate being from legitimate companies or institutions.

The goal is to achieve the victim pronounce specific confirmation words, which serve after raw material for artificial intelligence systems capable of reproducing the voice of the person with a surprising fidelity.

With this replicated voice, cybercriminals can authorize financial transactions, sign fake contracts and even usurp identities, all without the real knowledge of the viewed. The use of advanced technology in this scam makes the operation particularly effective and difficult to detect.

The danger hidden in confirmation

The words that seem so innocent are, in the context of this fraud, dangerous weapons. “Yes”, “ok” and “accepted” are common expressions used to confirm or accept something in a conversation.

Although usual in many situations, when pronounced in a call whose origin is not possible to verify, they may open the door to serious consequences.

From simple phone recordings, artificial intelligence can build responses that validate financial or legal operations, leaving the victim helpless.

How to protect

Authorities and consumer protection entities have been reinforcing warnings so that they never share sensitive data by phone.

This includes account numbers, passwords or authentication codes. If any suspicion arises during a call, the recommendation is to turn off immediately and directly contact the institution that allegedly made the call, using official contacts.

Confirming the identity of those who call is critical to avoid being a victim of this new form of sloping. It is also advisable not to affirmatively respond to unexpected calls, especially when the origin is unclear.

The advance of artificial intelligence is transforming the way criminals act, making frauds more sophisticated and difficult to identify. Therefore, a simple “yes” can cost much more than you think.

According to this, this type of scam will certainly continue to evolve, so surveillance must be constant. Anyone who is not prevented risks losing not only money, but also controlling their digital identity.
