At least 87 schools remain closed in Cabo Delgado due to recent attacks by extremist groups in the district of Chiúre, in that province of Northern Mozambique target of armed insurgency since 2017, local authorities announced.

“There is a job that is being done (…) to mapping how many children are in this situation of loss of evidence and where they are, because then we will have to submit to an evaluation, so as not to miss the school year,” Rachid Suále, the head of the Pedagogical Department of Cabo Delgado, told the head of the Pedagogical Department.

According to the representative, preliminary data indicates that more than 48,000 students and 490 teachers in that province were affected, the situation of being in that southern district of the province, the scene of extremist group attacks since July 24.

Suále also advanced that, at this moment, the screening of children who cannot perform the quarterly evaluations, due to terrorist raids, which already caused more than 57,000 displaced in the district of Chiúre.

Until June 21, at least 117 schools remained closed in various districts of Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, as announced at the time the local authorities.

The Minister of National Defense admitted last week concern about the wave of new attacks in Cabo Delgado, adding that the defense forces are on the ground to pursue the armed rebels.

“As a security force we are not pleased with the current state, given that terrorists in recent days have had access to the most distant areas of the center of gravity we have signed,” Minister Cristóvão Chume told journalists.

At least 349 people died in attacks by Islamic extremist groups in northern Mozambique in 2024, an increase of 36% compared to the previous year, according to a study released in February by the Center for Strategic Studies of Africa (ACSS).
