Fish are often promoted as a healthy element of diet, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein. However, not all fish are equal. Some species and fishing methods can lead to pollution and potential health threats. Here, first of all, it is worth focusing on. When buying fish, pay attention to balanced fishing certificates (e.g. MSC) and choose farm fish that use good practices. Let’s also make sure that the fish are fresh and come from proven sources. There are also species of fish, which through their composition can cause a lot of health ailments. This is the case and unaware of the risks willingly consume it. It is about butter fish, which is known for its delicate taste melting in the mouth. In Polish stores you can find it mainly in the form of frozen fillets or smoked carcasses.

Butter fish forbidden in the USA and Italy

Butter fish, although popular in Poland, abroad, in countries such as Italy, the USA or Japan, the sale of this species is completely prohibited. Why? Well, the problem lies in the composition of fish and possible health effects occurring after consumption.

Why is the butter fish considered harmful?

Oilfish (Escolar) was considered harmful due to the high content of wax esters in its meat, which are not digested by the human body. This means that the body is not able to absorb them and use them as a source of energy. It is these wax esters that cause many digestive problems. Consumption of more butter fish can lead to unpleasant digestive problems that occur after about 2.5 hours. from its consumption. May occur:

  • Diarrhea, because undigested wax esters act as a laxative.
  • Gastric cramps that can cause discomfort and pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.

For this reason, especially people with a sensitive digestive system should avoid butter fish. Of course, you don’t have to give up eating her. However, keep moderation and consume very small portions of butter fish (about 100-150 grams) at once.
