Cannot go out due to war
The Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH) of the New University of Lisbon asked this Friday for the Portuguese and Israelites “who act urgently” in the issuance of visa to the Palestinian student withheld in Gaza, considering being “an unacceptable situation”.
In a statement issued this Friday, the institution expressed “his profound concern about the situation of Tarek Al-Farra”, the Palestinian student residing in the Gaza Strip and admitted to a master’s degree in the Portuguese institution in English and American Studies that he should start in September.
“Tarek al-Farra awaits the issuance of the student visa, an indispensable requirement to be able to leave Gaza, a process that depends on the authorization of the Israelite authorities. The new FCSH has made all efforts to support Tarek, but the absence of effective mechanisms that guarantee the safe departure of students in conflict zones prevent the realization of the fundamental right to education and safety. Human and moral point of view ”, defended the college.
Recalling that Tarek Al-Farra remains in Gaza with the family “deprived of basic safety and survival conditions and subject to extreme restrictions imposed by the blockade”, the new FCSH called “the Portuguese and Israeli authorities to act urgently, ensuring the rapid emission of the student visa”.
The college also calls for “humanitarian mechanisms that allow the departure of students and researchers from war zones, honoring the ethical and institutional commitments made by universities.”
Tarek Al-Farra, 23, is registered with a master’s degree in the FCSH of the New University of Lisbon and has even paid part of the tuition fees, but can not get visa to study in Portugal due to war.
The Association of Students of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (AEFCSH) of the new manifested, in late July, jointly and severally with the case, adding that he remained in contact with the Palestinian student.
