The number of cases in which banking users are increased by sophisticated schemes, often without realizing that their data has been compromised. These practices, which resort to discrete technologies and increasingly refined methods, have allowed the performance of criminal networks in various areas of the country.

According to the Judicial Police, one of the most used techniques by these groups is the cloning of bank cards. This method allows the misconduct and undue movement of funds from the accounts associated with copied cards, causing significant financial losses to the victims.

How card data is copied

The perpetrators of this type of crime install devices known as “skimmers” at the ATM terminals, which copy information from the magnetic band of the cards.

At the same time, camouflaged microcâmars are placed to capture the PIN code introduced by the user at the time of the operation.

According to the authorities, this method is not limited to automatic boxes. Cloning can also occur in stores or other establishments, when payment terminals are manipulated.

Dismantled criminal network in four regions

The Judicial Police carried out the “CTRL €” operation in the regions of Greater Lisbon, Greater Porto, Minho and Algarve, resulting in the detention of ten individuals.

The suspects were involved in a network dedicated to the counterfeit and fraudulent use of bank cards, as well as the laundering of capital.

The damage caused by this group exceeds 450 thousand euros, revealing the dimension and impact of criminal activity.

How to reduce the risk of being a victim

Authorities recommend that users always check the state of the terminals before they use them, paying attention to any changes or loose parts.

If they detect something suspicious, they should immediately stop the operation and contact the bank or the authorities.

It is equally important to protect the keyboard by introducing the PIN, preventing hidden cameras or third parties from being able to see the sequence. If the survey or payment is not successfully completed, the card must be canceled and the bank immediately notified.

During payments in establishments, it is essential to keep the card always in cash, preventing any cloning attempts through tampered terminals.

Elderly are more exposed to risk

Older citizens are especially vulnerable to this type of fraud. The lower familiarity with electronic equipment, visual difficulties and the longest time needed to complete operations make us targets easier.

In this sense, the police recommends that, whenever possible, the elderly are accompanied by family members or caregivers during banking operations.

Surveillance remains the best defense

Being aware of signs of tampering and protecting bank data are effective ways to avoid this type of crime. Reporting suspicious situations to authorities or bank institutions contributes to combating these networks.

It underlines that cooperation between citizens, banks and security forces is critical to locking the performance of these organizations and reinforcing the safety of users.
