South Korea informed on Saturday that her army fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers exceeded a common border for a short time. According to the declaration of the United Command of the South Korean armed forces, the incident came on Tuesday. “Several North Korean soldiers operating near the military demarcation line (MDL) in the central part of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) exceeded MDL, to which our army responded by warning fire,” stated in a statement. According to Seoul, the DPRK soldiers withdrew back north of the line.
North Korea also responded to the incident on Saturday. According to the KCNA State Agency, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Korean People’s Army KO Jong-Chchol South Korean army accused from a deliberate provocation to encourage a military conflict. “On August 19, the war cruises from the south carried out a serious provocation when they fired more than ten warning shots from a large 12.7 mm machine gun to DPRK soldiers who worked on construction of a permanent border barrier near the southern line of the border, ” stated in a statement.
The voltage between Korea is growing at a time when South Korea and the United States perform a joint military exercise. North Korea’s claims about the number of shots so far could not be verified independently.
