Summer is an ideal time to walk through the garden with scissors in hand, but certainly not for headless cutting. Some trees and shrubs will appreciate the summer cut, others can seriously damage.
While the winter season is often a time for deeper interventions in trees and shrubs, it has its specific advantages. In summer, the plant is fully in growth, which makes it better to monitor its shape, health and the need for illumination. Therefore, the summer cut helps control the size of the crown, improves air flow and in some cases prevents the spread of diseases. But the key to success is the choice of suitable types and correct timing.
Which trees cut in the summer and even need it
These species include apple or pears. In these trees, the summer cut is not only suitable, but often necessary. Winter interventions increase the risk of infection, such as the silvery of leaves or bacterial asleep. The summer cut, which is done after harvest, helps to reduce overgrowth, improves the backlight of the crown and helps a healthy fetus next season.
These species strongly “bleed” in winter cut because they create many sap. But the summer cut after full foliage eliminates this problem. It is ideal to perform light interventions to illuminate or slightly reduce the crown, but avoid deep rejuvenation.
For magnolias, the summer cut is only suitable for light shaping and backlighting the crown. Larger interventions are less tolerated. In evergreen trees such as buxus or yew, summer shaping can be useful especially from aesthetic point of view, for example to maintain nice hedges.
When to avoid cut in the summer
Who reaches the scissors at the wrong time can lose flowers not only this year but also next year. For species such as lilacs, sweethearts or azaleas, it is necessary to wait for the bloom and trim at the latest by the middle of the summer. Later interventions unnecessarily exhaust the plant and deprive it of buds.

In some trees, such as oaks and elms, the summer cut is associated with the risk of transmission of serious diseases such as graphiosis or other. These diseases transmit who are active in the warm months. Thus, the cut in this period unnecessarily increases the risk of infection.
The rule is to avoid deep cut in late summer. The cut stimulates the growth of new shoots, but they do not manage to mature until winter, and there is a risk of freezing. It is preferable to either cut early in the summer, ie June to mid -July, or a seaming cut in the spring.
Summer cut has its advantages, but also risks. It should be targeted, gentle au of specific species well timed. It is suitable for fruit stone, trees with strong sap or aesthetically shaped shrubs. Conversely, in susceptible species and late flowering shrubs, it can do more harm than good. In general, the summer cut should be more maintenance than radical.
If you are not sure what and when to cut, it pays to consult an expert, whether because of the health of your trees or for safety in the garden. Trees are not only decorations, but living organisms that deserve the right care at the right time.
