German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt presented an investment plan of 10 billion euros in civil protection. He said it was a reaction to geopolitical tension and increasing extremism.

The German government wants to invest 10 billion euros in civil protection and crisis management by 2029. In an interview published on Sunday, this was stated for Bild by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, TASR reports.

“We are strengthening our civil protection,” said German Minister of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU). The plans arise against the background of increasing geopolitical tension, threats of extremism and so -called hybrid threats, including disinformation campaigns.

According to Bild, the Civil Protection Pact counts, among other things, with new sirens for the warning of the population, warning systems for mobile phones, new covers, heavy equipment or approximately 1,500 vehicles intended for fire extinguishing. The initiative should also include army exercises and rescue services. The Ministry of the Interior did not respond at the Reuters request for confirmation of messages and other information.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the German government decided to modernize civil protection covers. Currently, it has 579 with a capacity of approximately 480,000 people, many of which have not been used since the Cold War.
