US Open champion with victory over Italian Jannik Sinner in the final, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz recovered the first position of the ATP ranking, published on Monday (8).
In 2022, when Alcaraz won his first title in New York, the first Grand Slam of his career, the Spanish tennis player, who was then 19, became the younger number 1 in history.
Now Alcaraz overthrows the Italian – which was 65 weeks at the top – and confirms the wide domain of both players on the circuit.
The two divided the last eight titles of Grand Slam (four for each) and starred in the last three finals, with two alcaraz (Roland Garros and US Open) wins and one for Sinner (Wimbledon).
The third place in the ranking, the German Alexander Zverev, appears 4,850 points ago, followed by veteran Novak Djokovic, who in New York reached the semifinal for the 53rd time in 80 Grand Slam appearances and is now number 4 in the world, while American Taylor Fritz closes the top 5.
The big leap on the list was by Canadian Felix Auger-Aissime, defeated by Sinner in the US Open semifinal. He returned to the top 20, as number 13 of the world, after rising 14 positions.
In turn, the young Brazilian João Fonseca, who was eliminated in the second round in New York, reached the best ranking of his career, rising from 45th to 42nd place.
