Brussels – Asylum applications in the European Union decreased significantly in the first half of the year. As the EU Commission announced on Monday, 399,000 applications were made from January to June, 23 percent less than in the previous year. In Austria there was a decrease of 37 percent to 8,637 applications during this period. EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner sees it “the result of a more consistent policy of the EU”. The recognition quota fell to a record low of 25 percent.
