The Portuguese coach leaves the technical command of Azerbaijan after 11 games, where he added two draws and nine losses.
Fernando Santos came to agree to terminate the contract with the Azerbaijan Football Federation (Affa). The decision was announced this Monday by the Portuguese coach in a statement.
“I cannot help but thank the President of the Federation for the respect and personal consideration he has always had for me. I also thank the people of Azerbaijan for hospitality and the affection that demonstrated me throughout this period.”
In the text, he recalled that the challenge of training the Azerbaijan selection was proposed June last year to “Reformulate the country’s football bases from a technical and infrastructural point of view, through competitive staff and training, to present a competitive team in the qualification phase for Euro 2028.”
“I presented, with the appropriate adaptations, a comprehensive plan, in September 2024, like other projects I developed in federations where I worked. I hope this project could be useful to affa and motivate the investment needed to create and develop football talents that enable better results in the future.
