Angela Maria Diniz Gonsalves, known artistically as Angela Ro Ro, died on Monday (8.Set.2025) at Silvestre Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The 75 -year -old singer and songwriter was hospitalized since June with severe pulmonary infection. After facing various health complications during this period, Angela contracted a new infection that resulted in her death.
The singer received the nickname “Ro Ro” in childhood because of her naturally severe voice. He began his classic piano studies at age 5, developing a musical base that contributed to his later artistic originality.
The musical trajectory of Angela Ro Ro was effective in the 1970s, after a trip to Italy where he met filmmaker Glauber Rocha. Then he moved to London, where he worked as a cleaning lady in a hospital, waitress and dishwasher in a restaurant, also performing some performances in English pubs.
By indication of Glauber Rocha, the singer participated in the album “Fuck”from, playing harmonica in the track “Nostalgia: That’s What Rock’n’roll Is All About”. When he returned to Rio de Janeiro, he began to perform at nightclubs and was hired by the Polygram/Polydor label (current Universal Music).
National recognition came in 1980, when he interpreted “Love, my great love”your composition in partnership with Ana Terra, at the Phoenix Theater. Dressed of tuxedo and alone on stage, he presented to the country an artist who expressed feelings from the female perspective. In the same program, he shared the stage with veteran singer Angela Maria, in a meeting that united different generations.
Angela Ro Ro stood out in Brazilian popular music with a style that combined blues, samba-song, bolero and rock. He was known for his franchise to address personal themes in his compositions. She was admittedly lesbian. One of the themes was the fight against homophobia. Angela had a love relationship with singer Zizi Possi. After the troubled end of the relationship with an accusation of aggression, Angela released the album “Scandal” (1981).
