A video captured in Tunes, Tunisia’s capital, shows the moment when Family Boat, the main vessel of the Global Sumud and sailing with Portuguese flag, was hit by a drone. The attack caused a fire on board, quickly controlled by the crew.
The humanitarian mission carried several Portuguese figures, including the coordinator of the Left Bloc, Mariana Mortágua, actress Sofia Aparício and activist Miguel Duarte. According to their own, all members of the Portuguese delegation are well.
The organization confirmed in a statement that the fire has caused superficial damage on the deck and warehouse, but without compromising the safety of the vessel, which may continue to travel. An investigation has already been opened.
On social networks, UN special rapporteur for West Bank and Gaza, Francesca Albanese, denounced the attack and called on the urgent protection of the other Flotilha boats.
Global Sumud Flotilla, which departed from Barcelona to Gaza, aims to be “the greatest humanitarian mission in history” for Palestinian territory. The name “Sumud” means “resilience” in Arabic.
