The President of the United States, Donald Trump, will be present at the 2026 World Cup final, on July 19th, at the MetLife Stadium, in New Jersey, and will present the trophy to the champion team, FIFA told AFP.
Trump has not yet attended any game in this edition of the World Cup, organized jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Shortly before FIFA’s confirmation, the entity’s president, Gianni Infantino, had announced in an interview with a program on the American broadcaster FOX: “We will be at the president’s side [Trump] watching the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together.”
The act will not be new: in 2022, the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, did the same, holding the trophy alongside Gianni Infantino to hand it to Lionel Messi, captain of Argentina, champion after defeating France on penalties.
Even for Trump, this scenario is familiar, since it was he who, last year, handed over the Club World Cup trophy, held in the United States, to the players of Chelsea, the team that beat Paris Saint-Germain in the final, at the same MetLife Stadium.
The presence of the American president on the podium surprised some of the ‘Blues’ players, including the team’s star, Cole Palmer, whose expression of dissatisfaction went viral on social media.
