Amazon buys participation in the Latin American rappi delivery startup

Amazon has acquired a participation in the Colombian company of Rappi deliveries, a strategic partnership that unites the retail and technology infrastructure of the e-commerce giant with one of the last-mile delivery companies in Latin America.

Having access to Rappi’s logistics network can help Amazon compete with the regional weight of e-commerce, market. For Rappi, the partnership brings an endorsement of the largest online retailer in North America and opportunities to take advantage of its cloud logistics and computing networks.

The initial investment – a convertible note of $ 25 million, according to a person familiar with the transaction – is small for Amazon. But the agreement gives to Seattle -based company the right to buy up to 12% of Rappi through Warrants, if certain goals are achieved, said the person, who asked for anonymity because the terms of the agreement are confidential. The numbers may eventually change.

Amazon and Rappi spokesmen refused to comment.

In recent years, Amazon has used Warrants to make direct investments in partners, including airlines, a food distributor and electronics manufacturers – an attempt to capture more gains if Amazon’s business boosts the fortune of its partners.

Rappi was founded in 2015 and became ubiquitous from Mexico to Chile with its “Turbo” offer – a promise to deliver everything from white wine to toothpaste in less than 10 minutes. The company also makes restaurant deliveries and entered the financial sector, creating a digital wallet and obtaining regulatory approval in places such as Colombia to offer credit cards and savings accounts.

Rappi has the support of weight investors, including Softbank Group, Sequoia Capital and T. Rowe Price. Last year, Simón Perro, co -founder and CEO of Rappi, said the company could open capital in 2025, possibly in New York. Bloomberg reported last month that Rappi had secured a $ 100 million loan from Banco Santander and Kirkoswald Capital Partners.

Amazon’s investment in Rappi reinforces existing commercial ties. Rappi is a client of Amazon Web Services, the cloud provider. In Mexico, Amazon offers members of their Prime Prime program a year of free shipping via Rappi.
