Two separate censure proposals against her are expected to be submitted today by the political groups of the far -right and the left in the European Parliament, just hours after her annual speech on the Union’s situation.
The proposal by the far -right group of patriots will say that “today is weaker than ever because of the committee’s persistent failure to face the most pressing challenges.”
On the other hand, the Left’s proposal also criticizes the Commission’s commercial policy, but places more emphasis on what is “inertia of the EU executive power on the Israeli war in Gaza” according to the wording, which was also taken by Politico.
Although Mrs von der Laien has announced in her speech on the Union’s situation that she would propose sanctions against Israeli ministers and settlers, the Left’s leadership says this is not enough.
“You have not received real sanctions and your current announcement is not changing anything,” said Left Co -chairman Manon Obri, “in front of the genocide, there can be no half -meters.”
July’s censure proposal
It is recalled that a motion of censure against von der Layen had also been filed last July, from the right, with 360 MEPs voting against removal from his position, 175 in favor and 18 abstaining.
Something similar is considered the most likely to happen now, with the date of the vote being probably defined for October.
What does the regulation specify
Parliamentary rules stipulate that a group can only submit a censure proposal with 72 signatures two months after the previous one – otherwise, 144 names are needed.
The latest proposal was submitted on July 10, which means that the earliest teams can submit their proposals with 72 signatures is on Wednesday at midnight.
“The plan is still undergoing as soon as possible,” said Thomas Shannon, a spokesman for the left.
A senior patriot official confirmed that the team would also submit a motion of censure at midnight.
